  • Colorado National Monument – Wildlife

Colorado National Monument has a lot of wildlife for a desert.

    Image

We mostly only saw lizards though.

    Image

    And plants.

    Image

Because it was too hot for most animals to be out and about.

    Image

But some cool lizards were showing off how tough they are.

    Image

    This is a spiky plant.

    Image

There were signs next to all of the plants, but we’re writing this months later and don’t remember what any of them said.

    Image

We do remember that this is a cactus flower.

    Image

Partially because we have another picture of it attached to the cactus.

    Image

Some of the cactus flowers were orange.

    Image

They are also pollenated by bees.

    Image

    These were not cactus flowers.

    Image

    This is yucca.

    Image

The leaves at the base catch rainwater and funnel it toward the root.

    Image

    The flowers look like garlic.

    Image

They are pollenated by the yucca moth.

    Image

Then they make these green pod things.

    Image

This is not yucca, it’s juniper. Though the flowers still look garlicky

    Image

    This is a beetle.

  • Arches National Park – Devil’s Garden

This was a longer hike in the desert, so we had to be prepared and carry lots of water. Matt carried 4L in the backpack.

    Image

    Kerri was more creative.

    Image

The path was beautiful but sometimes difficult to follow.

    Image

We kept running into these “no hiking signs”, which indicated we were not on the right path. But they didn’t give us any clues how to get back to the right path.

    Image

This turned out to be the wrong path.

    Image

But we didn’t find that out until after Kerri celebrated.

  • The Big Long Rock

We had to climb on top of this big long rock, which was much scarier than it looks in the pictures.

    Image

It was also much prettier than it looks in the pictures.

    Image

    It was a good spot.

    Image

To one side you could see open fields with things growing.

    Image

But in most directions were desert and mountains.

  • Devil’s Garden

We went on a hike through the devil’s garden.

    Image

We spent most of our time looking for tiny trail markers to figure out if we were on the right path.

    Image

We passed lots of weird sandstone formations.

    Image

Kerry thought this one looked like a chess knight. Matt disagreed.

    Image

    The rocks were very big.

    Image

The space between them was also very big.

    Image

    This was a boring arch.

    Image

    This was a window arch.

    Image

You could see the mountains in the background. It was very pretty.
