  • Mamalahoa Trail

The Mamalahoa Trail is over 50km long.

    Image

It goes from Kona to Puako.

    Image

We were far to lazy for that so we only visited the part next to the mall that had petroglyphs.

    Image

    And rock shelters.

    Image

They don’t look like they would provide much shelter.

    Image

Ancient Hawaiians had proportions that make Barbie look realistic.

    Image

Or maybe not so ancient Hawaiians.

    Image

Some of the petroglyphs might date back to the 1400s.

    Image

But a lot are obviously Colonial era.

    Image

There were definitely a lot of them.

    Image

    Mostly circles and people.

    Image

We could of course read all of them.

    Image

This guy is doing deadlifts. That’s how he got such a wide chest.

    Image

This guy is very bad at juggling.

    Image

This guy is falling off a bicycle.

    Image

    These are very skinny acrobats.

    Image

That’s as far down the trail as we got.

  • Hawaii Helicopter Ride

We had to get up very early.

    Image

We got in the helicopter as the sun was rising.

    Image

    And it took off.

    Image

And we flew high over the ground.

    Image

    Above the clouds

    Image

Which really interfered with the scenicness.

    Image

Fortunately the clouds started to clear.

    Image

And then we could see the mini-volcanos.

    Image

    And the big ones.

    Image

    And the bigger ones.

    Image

And the biggest one of all.

    Image

Then we went over to the active one.

    Image

    Which had molten lava inside.

    Image

    It was splooping.

    Image

Further down the mountain it was flowing

    Image

    Slowly flowing

    Image

    And cooling and crusting.

    Image

There were small islands that the volcano hadn’t set on fire.

    Image

    This was a bigger one.

    Image

You can see where the road used to be.

    Image

At the edge there were a lot of dead trees.

    Image

Then we were back over the green part of the island.

    Image

    The clouds were all gone.

    Image

Then we went to the coast.

    Image

    And saw some whales.

    Image

    And some waterfalls.

    Image

    Very steep waterfalls.

    Image

    These ones were more inland.

    Image

    They were also steep.
