Our campsite tonight was being surrounded by hippos. They were far away when we got there but walked closer as night fell.
As a side note these plants that look like they are from Dr. Seuss are papyrus reeds.
Back to the hippos. They are much more active in the evening.
As it got dark they got tired and started yawning.
Which is kind of scary.
Lots and lots of yawning.
Okay maybe it was more a sign of strength as this is a bit excessive to be called a yawn.
There were also some gorillas in the Pablo group that were not silverbacks.
They were pretty big too.
They were not very interested in us.
And a bit scary.
Especially when they decided they wanted to get somewhere fast.
But mostly they just ate.
Because there was food everywhere.
And gorillas like to eat.
The day after visiting the gorillas we decided to go on another hike. This time to see the golden monkeys in the Kabitwa group.
There were lots of them all over. The walk also wasn’t nearly as bad as the gorillas and we only had to get up to the bamboo forest and just through a small section of stinging nettles.
The monkeys really like to eat the wild celery.
They do not know how to chew with their mouths closed.
Some of them were hiding in the bamboo and hard to find.
They were pretty laid back and sleepy when we were there.
Out of the hundred or so golden monkeys there were some young ones.
They were a lot more active than the adults.
And as always, just as we were leaving they started jumping all over and playing.
Although some would just have a snack on the slender branches that the adults can’t sit on.
They were more fun than the adults.
They waved goodbye to us.
Camping in Africa is really rustic. Their pool isn’t even heated and no Jacuzzi.
Then there are the trees in the way of the views.
We have to put up our own tent.
Then there are the neighbours just wandering around while you are trying to relax in the tent. .
The hedge blocked our view of the White Nile out the front door in the morning.
And you only get three meals a day. Even have to assemble your own sandwich. In all seriousness it is awesome and never thought I would enjoy camping. Still does not make me want to camp at all at home. Surprisingly there are far fewer mosquitos than back home which makes it far more bearable.
