• Kenyan Feast

This is Juma our cook for the first leg of the tour.

    image_thumb[2]

These are the primary ingredients for most of our dinners.

    image_thumb

We are on a rotation to help cook, which means chopping up the veggies.

    image_thumb[1]

Here are some of the dishes we get for dinner.

    image

These are cooked green bananas in a tomato sauce.

    image

This is chipata, which tastes a little like strudel.

    image

This is a traditional Kenyan stew.

    image

    Here’s the cooked spinach.

    image

This is ugali which is a corn flour “bread” that you eat the stew with after forming it into a little scoop.

    image

    Like this.

    image

Juma is a great cook and we were not going to lose any weight on this trip.

  • Uganda Lake Walk

We went on a village walk today which took us to a lake.

    image

First we started through the tea plantations.

    image

These are the flowers of a tea tree.

    image

They would grow into tall trees but to make them harvestable they are kept short. They only pick the top 2.5 leaves, and they can do this every week or so depending on the amount of rain.

    image

Many women carry heavy loads on their head in Africa.

    image

Along the walk there were a good number of dragonflies which help to keep the mosquitos down.

    image

There are all different kinds, more than we have pictures of as most of the time they are in the air.

    image

There were many butterflies fluttering about.

    image

As well as spiders waiting for something to flutter into their webs for lunch.

    image

    And whatever this was.

    image

Down by the lake were many birds taking a break from fishing.

    image

The views were amazing, Uganda is very green with all the tea and banana plantations.

    image

The village kids were collecting water to take up the hill.

    image

We had to cross a makeshift bridge to head towards the village. No one fell in.

    image

Most of the homes are just simple mud and thatch.

    image

This family was preparing fish for drying.

    image

    Lots and lots of fish.

    image

It took him about 20 seconds per fish to scale and gut.

    image

    These were the ones waiting.

    image

It was also the harvest season so the corn was being dried out.

    image

Some bananas were also harvested. They pick them green here too and let them ripen. They are a little smaller than the ones we get in the grocery store.

    image

The family also had goats with a couple of babies.

    image

This house was reinforced by more sticks to allow it to be bigger. It also had a steel roof which doesn’t require the constant upkeep like thatch.

    image

Their kitchen is simple with a small fireplace and food for cooking.

    image

Outside were more insects like wasps.

    image

They also grow peanuts. See all the peanuts?

    image

Of course not because they are underground. They dig them up then leave them out to dry before collecting so they don’t weigh so much.

    image

There were more butterflies around too.

    image

There were some really large flies that would bother us, but not nearly as bad as the ones in Australia.

    image

If only more birds would be around then perhaps there would have been fewer flies.

    image

Although with more birds we would have likely seen fewer of the big insects like these grasshoppers.

  • Crater Lakes

There is an elephant in this picture. Maybe more than one. But one that we noticed. The very first African Elephant we saw.

    image

He is trying to hide behind the tree.

    image

There are animals on the far side of this lake too.

    image_thumb

    Kerri thinks it’s two wolves.

    image

    Hunting a moose.

    image

Matt insists that the far side of the lake is not Canada.

    image_thumb1

Next to this lake is definitely elephants.

    image

    Lots of elephants.

    image

    Of various sizes.

    image

    With babies.

    image

    Of various sizes.

    image

The babies are clumsy and funny.

  • Lake Nakuru

This was the first lake we visited in Africa. It is an alkaline lake.

    image_thumb[18]

You should know what these are by now. We’ve seen several different species all around the world thus far. image_thumb[19]

This is a heron. (The last ones were cormorants if you couldn’t remember).

    image_thumb[20]

  • Morning at Lake Nakuru

As we left camp we did a morning game drive.

    image

    The usual suspects were out.

    image

    This is a medication dart.

    image

The giraffes gave us a look as we drove past.

    image

The whole family could work on this tree from lower branches to the upper.

    image

Giraffes can’t eat the same tree for long as many release compounds that make it taste very bitter so then they wander to the next tree.

    image

They can be used to determine the direction of the wind because they always walk into the wind.

    image

That’s because the plant that is being eaten can signal downwind plants that they are being eaten and go bitter.

    image

A couple warthogs were spotted walking around.

    image

We also saw our first dik dik. This is the smallest of the gazelles.

    image

We stopped at a viewpoint and we found some really cool looking lizards sunning themselves.

    image

The drastic colour difference was quite interesting to see.

    image

It did not help them blend in at all, which this one knows quite well as you can see the regrown tail.

    image

Here is the female they are showing off for. She blends in with the rocks.

    image

There were other lizards as well, but they were a bit harder to spot.

    image

There were a few hyraxes around hanging out in the sun.

    image

Even they get a bit chilled at night.

    image

At night they will huddle together to keep warm.
