Great Barrier Reef: Itty Bitty Stuff

The closer you got to the reef the more things you could find. Like this crab.

These barnacles found a nice home on the mooring line.

If you look close you can see the pipefish and the worms on this coral.

This one is a big easier to find.

All I saw was the antennae and I pointed the camera in that direction. Turns out it was a shrimp.

Here’s a nudiebranch.

Here were some crabs that came out at night.

Here’s another nudibranch, they get really colourful.

Again at night the crabs were out and we surprised this one.

These are christmas tree worms that very rapidly disappear back into their hole if you get too close.

Great Barrier Reef: Cod Hole

One of the dive sites were were at was Cod Hole. This is where potato cod come and hang out as they have been fed for years.

They are pretty big fish.

They swim right up to and around you.

Which Kerri didn’t like.

They are really just checking out if we have any food with us.

They were really funny looking.

And would sneak up when you weren’t looking.

Crocodile Hunting

This is where the crocodiles live. Can you see them all?

We went looking for them on a boat where we would be safe.

We got candy as well and Matt was enjoying his while searching for crocs.

Before we found crocs we saw some birds.

There was the first one.

They blend in really well and wouldn’t have been spotted without being pointed out.

Every croc has a different type of pattern on them.

All the spines and scales help reduce turbulence when stalking prey under the water.

This was was sunning itself as the tide was coming in.

It was slowing getting submerged as the water rose.

Keeping away from the water’s edge in northern Australia is a good idea with all these guys around.

Wildlife Park

On our way north to the Daintree we stopped at a wildlife park in Port Douglas.

There were many birds wandering around.

This is a stork, although we saw several in the wild before seeing one in captivity.

This looks like some kind of goose.

Here’s another flat billed bird.

Unlike the birds the lizards were just staying still.

As we had seen a little already, the birds have very bright coloured feathers.

They would check us out sometimes as we wandered around.

This owl glanced at us a bit but was really just trying to sleep.

Matt is not pointing at nothing. The whole area above him is a mass of canopy spiders.

They look like this.

They had one big male croc.

Importantly they had cassowaries. We probably wouldn’t see them in the wild so we were glad to be able to see them somewhere.

They are really cool looking birds and given their size, beak and claws we didn’t really want to see them in the wild.

There were a few chicks wandering around in the open enclosure.

They looked pretty funny.

The roos came by to see what we were up to as well.

The wallabies were interested too.

Outback Wildlife

As you have seen there are many strange and beautiful animals in Australia. Kerri had been stalking these birds for a long time before she finally got a nice picture of the bright pink birds.

This guy was a bit easier being in an enclosure.

This was the first we saw of red kangaroo.

This poor dingo did not have a very long chain. He could at least rest under a tree in the shade.

There were some cool insets as well wandering around.

Sometimes even the twitchy little birds would stop just long enough for Kerri to get a shot.

Although Kerri usually makes it a point to chase the pigeons, this one had a Mohawk so it was only being harassed by the camera.

There were quite a few birds around. They could be doing a better job of eating the really annoying flies though.

This one was not sure what to make of us.

It eventually decided we weren’t that much of a threat and decided to look onward.

Even the ants are really big in the outback.

These are the really annoying flies we previously mentioned.

They go straight for your eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Thankfully we were in the outback when there weren’t that many. In the summer you have to get a net as they are in very thick swarms.

While we waited for sunset, mohawk pigeon hung out with us for a bit watching as well.
